2012 Camaro

Chevy finally showed off the fastest Camaro they have ever made at the Chicago Auto Show. This new "Super Camaro" will be sold as a 2012 model and be known as the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The ZL1 name comes from the Camaro ZL1 that was developed in the late 1960s. Only 69 built but they achieved mythical status and were the pinnacle of the Camaro performance era.

According to Rick Scheidt, who is the vice president of Chevrolet marketing, "Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously. It's the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we've chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history."

It uses the same LSA 6.2-liter supercharged engine that propels the Cadillac CTS-V from 0-60 in a mere 3.9 seconds. The force fed power plant will produce about 550 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque and will be matched to a high performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission that utilizes a dual-disc clutch. The new Camaro will be packed with tons of performance technologies that make the ZL1 a track ready car.
The ZL1 has a dual-mode exhaust system which was first introduced on the Corvette. This dual-mode exhaust system changes the sound level in response to the engine's RPM which gives the Camaro a signature sound. The Magnetic Ride Control suspension system will allow the driver to select between "Tour" and "Sport" mode depending on what kind of driving they are in the mood for. Chevy also hooked up some beefy rear stabilizer bars that are more effective in handling body roll in turns. The Camaro ZL1 also comes with a Brembo braking system that utilizes large 14.6-inch rotors and six-piston calipers in the front and a four-piston setup in the rear. The brakes also provide feedback to the ZL1's electronic steering system for high-performance driving.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 also has some distinguishing design cues that set it apart from the stock Camaro. The fascia now has a front splitter with new fog lamps. The hood has front-mounted air extractors that direct air over the car creating aerodynamic downforce. The carbon fiber center reduces the weight of the hood while communicating this Camaro isn't here to play around. The Super Camaro will sit on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels that will be lighter than the 20-inch wheels used on the SS. The wheels will come with Goodyear Supercar F2 tires designed just for for the ZL1.
